Timing matters more on box than any other hedge

1. Early June (Derby Day)

   The traditional first cut, the first Saturday in June. By then box has finished its spring growth flush and the new leaves have hardened enough to clip without wilting. We cut on an overcast day where we can, full sun on freshly clipped box scorches the cut edges brown.

2. Late August – early September

   A second light trim to tidy the shape before winter, once the nesting closure has ended.

Box blight

Box blight is common across Kent gardens. We sterilise blades with methylated spirits between plants on any garden with signs of blight, and dispose of clippings off-site rather than composting them, composting spreads the spores. If your box is badly affected, we'll say so honestly rather than keep clipping a plant that's past saving, and can advise on resistant alternatives.

Box and low edging work is priced by length and complexity of the shape. Straightforward edging runs from £80; more elaborate parterre or topiary-integrated box work is quoted after seeing photos.
