Chatham itself, the estuary-facing wards down towards the Dockyard and Chatham Maritime, the newer estates up on Walderslade and Weeds Wood, and the neighbouring towns of Gillingham and Rochester. Different ground, different wind exposure, different hedge problems.
The town centre and the streets running up from the river towards the railway line. Terraced Victorian gardens are small and mostly privet or leylandii; New Road and the town-centre fringe carry a mix of older boundary hedges and newer infill planting. Ground here is heavy Thames-Medway estuarine clay, holds water in winter, cracks hard in a dry summer.
The Historic Dockyard and the modern development around it. St Mary's Island and Chatham Maritime are newer builds on reclaimed dockyard land, low boundary planting and formal hedging around the marina developments, directly exposed to wind off the estuary. Parts of the older Dockyard fringe sit inside a Medway Council conservation area.
Up on the higher ground towards the North Downs. Post-war and later estates, larger gardens, chalk-influenced soil that drains faster than the clay down by the river. Leylandii and conifer boundary hedges are the dominant feature and the single biggest source of neighbour disputes we see in this part of Chatham.
Our round covers the wider Medway towns either side of Chatham. Gillingham runs east along the same estuary exposure as Chatham Maritime, continuing on into Rainham, a smaller town further along the same corridor with a more suburban, less estuary-exposed feel once you're away from the Saxon shoreline; Rochester, to the west, has its own historic core and conservation-area coverage around the cathedral and castle precinct.
